What happens if the IRS contacts me about my return?
If the IRS contacts you regarding a return we prepared, notify us immediately and we will handle the correspondence on your behalf. IRS communication is a normal part of tax filing and does not necessarily indicate a problem — it could be a routine verification, a request for additional information, or an adjustment notice.
Common types of IRS correspondence include: CP notices (automated computer-generated notices about balance due, refund changes, or processing issues), information requests asking for documentation to support positions on your return, math error notices where the IRS has adjusted your return due to a calculation discrepancy, and audit notifications requesting examination of your return.
As your tax preparer, we are authorized to communicate with the IRS on your behalf. If you have signed a Power of Attorney (Form 2848) designating us as your representative, we can handle all correspondence directly without your involvement. We recommend that all our clients sign this authorization at the outset of our engagement.
For returns we prepared, our response to IRS inquiries is included as part of our service at no additional cost for routine correspondence. This includes drafting response letters, gathering supporting documentation, and communicating with IRS representatives.
For audit situations, which are more involved, we provide comprehensive audit support. Our Enrolled Agents are authorized to represent you before all levels of the IRS — examinations, appeals, and collections. If an audit is initiated, we will: review the scope of the audit, gather all necessary documentation, prepare responses, attend meetings or conferences with the IRS on your behalf, and negotiate any proposed adjustments.
Important: Never ignore IRS correspondence. Deadlines for responding are typically 30-60 days, and failing to respond can result in default assessments. Forward any IRS notices to us immediately.
