What is Tax Preparer?

Any individual who prepares tax returns for compensation, ranging from licensed professionals to seasonal preparers.

Definition

A tax preparer is any individual who prepares, or assists in preparing, federal tax returns for compensation. Tax preparers range from licensed professionals (CPAs, Enrolled Agents, tax attorneys) to unlicensed seasonal preparers with a PTIN (Preparer Tax Identification Number). The IRS requires all paid preparers to have a PTIN. For complex situations like cross-border taxation, using a credentialed preparer (EA or CPA) with specific expertise is strongly recommended over unlicensed preparers.
