What is Bona Fide Residence Test?

IRS test requiring uninterrupted residence in a foreign country for an entire tax year to qualify for the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion.

Definition

The Bona Fide Residence Test is one of two tests used to qualify for the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion (FEIE). To pass, you must be a bona fide resident of a foreign country for an uninterrupted period that includes an entire tax year (January 1 - December 31). The IRS considers factors like your intentions, the nature of your stay, your ties to the foreign country, and whether you established a home there.
