What is Child Tax Credit for Expats?
The Child Tax Credit is a US tax benefit worth up to $2,000 per qualifying child — expats may claim it even for children living abroad under specific rules.
Definition
The Child Tax Credit (CTC) allows US taxpayers to reduce their tax liability by up to $2,000 per qualifying child under age 17. Unlike the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion, the CTC is not automatically forfeited when you live abroad. However, the refundable portion (Additional Child Tax Credit — ACTC) has special rules for expats. If you exclude income under FEIE, that exclusion can reduce or eliminate the refundable ACTC because it reduces earned income used in the ACTC calculation. Children living abroad can qualify if they are US citizens and meet dependency tests. Since 2021, the credit was temporarily expanded to $3,000-$3,600 but reverted to $2,000 from 2022 unless extended by Congress.
Who Needs to Know This?
US expat parents with qualifying US citizen children, regardless of whether those children live in the US or abroad. Particularly relevant for expats who also use FEIE.
Key Deadline
Claimed annually on your US federal tax return (Schedule 8812)
Potential Penalties
Incorrectly claiming the refundable portion while using FEIE can trigger IRS audits and accuracy-related penalties of 20%

Common Mistakes to Avoid
- 1Assuming FEIE disqualifies you from any Child Tax Credit
- 2Claiming the full refundable ACTC when FEIE reduces qualifying earned income
- 3Not checking if your child is a US citizen and thus eligible
- 4Missing the child's SSN requirement — children need an SSN, not an ITIN, to qualify
